SWSE UNVEILS SUDBURY FRANCHISE NAME/LOGO FOR NBL CANADA
(Greater Sudbury, ON.) Today, SW SPORTS & ENTERTAINMENT announced the name of the
first National Basketball League of Canada (NBL Canada) franchise for the Northern Ontario
market. The Sudbury FIVE Basketball team, known locally as The FIVE, will begin to play in the
Sudbury Community Arena, competing in the 8 the NBL Canada season, beginning in November
2018 (scheduled to be released in August 2018). Team owner and governor, Dario Zulich, revealed the Name and Brand alongside, Deputy Commissioner Audley Stephenson of the NBL Canada and Agency of Record Launchpad Creative’s Head, Clifton Skelliter.
“We are following through on the vision we put forward to redefine the entertainment landscape. I am so excited about The FIVE because it represents basketball passion and culture. It is symbolic of the region’s traditional area code, 705, where Greater Sudbury centers the 5 major urban cities,”
said Zulich. “Beyond geography, The FIVE, also represents the area’s nickname, The Big Nickel, the obvious relationship with the rich history of underground mining because, historically, we are the number one Nickel Producer in the world.”
“It was unfortunate I could not be on hand for the launch, never the less, NBL Canada is eager to
see the expansion north into new markets and especially, relationships,” said
“Dario and his team represent a vision that has enormous potential for our sport and our entertainment
across the country and we look forward the energy and passion he brings to this city, to our
basketball community across the country. I love the vibe and feel that the team name and brand
represent. This is going to make people across the country re-evaluate what they think of Sudbury
in Northern Ontario.”
“Last year, together with Andrew (Dale – VP Marketing SWSE), we launched a naming campaign
which drew a lot of excitement and engagement,” said Skelliter.
“This gave our team at Launchpad Creative the opportunity to review the amazing ideas from the community and narrow it down before the group chose between a number of finalists. The name informs the tone and feel of the
brand that we developed as well as the way the brand interacts with the market. We believe that
this team and brand has the potential to inspire a lot of people. It’s going to be great!”
